Usher – U Got It Bad Chord Progression
Man, this was my favourite song when it came out. A Bryan B Cox R&B special! Picture 10-year-old Stefan laying in bed with his Sony walkman cassette player singing his heart, confessing his love to Georgina (my crush at the time).
Don’t tell me you didn’t do the same! Maybe you’re just too young. Either way, there’s no denying that this song is emotional. And one of Usher’s biggest and most rememberable hits.
Other than the fantastic penmanship, a big part of this comes from the chord progression. Its use of the 6 and 4 chords then incremental downward progression at the end of each 8 bar loop. It’s very similar to the chord progressions that we looked at with Kiana Lede – Show Love in that manner. However, this chord progression ends in a beautiful 2-5-1.
Interestingly this song uses what sounds like a fake guitar, a troop for the 90s and 00s R&B. However, the chords I’ve used represent the general harmony of the song. (Watch video to see the order in which to play each chord.)
